Wood Species Used for Heavy Timbers and Fine Furniture

Dreaming Creek is uniquely suited to provide hand-selected wood for our timber frame structures, heavy timber construction, and high-quality woodcraft, including:

Wood Species for Timber Frames

Dreaming Creek uses the following wood species in our timber frames:

  • Red Oak
    • Color: Light red to wheat
    • Applications: Interior only
    • Stability: Fair
  • White Oak
    • Color: Light brown/tan
    • Applications: Interior and Exterior
    • Stability: Fair
  • Southern Yellow Pine (KD)
    • Color: Yellow/golden
    • Applications: Interior only
    • Stability: Good when kiln dried
  • Eastern White Pine (EWP)
    • Color: Light yellow/white
    • Applications: Interior and Exterior
    • Stability: Good
  • Douglas Fir (FOHC, KD, RFKD)
    • Color: Light red/pink
    • Applications: Interior and Exterior
    • Stability: Great when kiln dried
      • FOHC : Free Of Heart Centers is a cut of Fir that doesn’t contain the heart of the tree. The resulting cut of timber is extremely stable due to the removal of the stresses contained in the heart of a tree. Great for using in areas of low relative humidity (ie. Denver,Steamboat Springs, Park City, etc.)
      • KD: Kiln Dried wood is dried to a moisture content of 19% in the outer 1-2″ of wood. Core moisture content will be slightly higher.
      • RF : Radio Frequency kiln dried wood is dried to a moisture content of 15% throughout. Very dry and stable.
  • IPE
    • Color: Dark brown/blackish
    • Applications: Interior, Exterior, and Extreme duty
    • Stability: Great when kiln dried
  • Cypress
    • Color: Light yellow/white
    • Applications: Interior and Exterior
    • Stability: Fair
  • Eastern Red Cedar
    • Color: Red with white sapwood
    • Applications: Interior and Exterior
    • Stability: Great
  • Western Red Cedar
    • Color: Light and dark browns
    • Applications: Interior and Exterior
    • Stability: Great
  • Walnut
    • Color: Rich chocolate brown w/ white sapwood
    • Applications: Interior and Exterior (covered)
    • Stability: Fair
  • Redwood
    • Color: Light red with brownish tones
    • Applications: Interior and Exterior
    • Stability : Great

    • Color: Light yellow/white/tans
    • Recommended Uses : Flooring and paneling

Wood Finishes

We offer these fine finishes for our timbers and other wood products:

  • Planed smooth/S4S – All surfaces are smooth.
  • Sanded – All surfaces will be sanded to the appropriate specification (typically 80 grit).
  • Distressed – Appears aged and weathered as all surfaces have raised grain.
  • Distressed and Adzed – Same as Distressed with addition of hatch marks throughout
  • Hand Hewn – Classic chopped look of authentically hewn logs for use as timber.
  • Oiled – One coat of factory applied Penofin Verde, an environmentally responsible finish that seals and protects your wood.
